Welcome to Westside
School Library from Donna McCrory, Westside’s librarian. The students call me
Miss Donna. This is the 16th year I have been the librarian at
Westside and my 21st year to teach at Westside. My husband, Andy
Scruggs, teaches 8th grade at Macon County Junior High.
Students in 4th grade, Ms. Horton’s, Ms. Denning’s, and Ms. Griggs’s
classes will check out and return a library book on Monday of each week.
Students in 5th grade, 3rd grade, Ms. Willis’s, Ms.
Pedigo’s, and Ms. Templeton’s classes will check out a library book on
Tuesday of each week. Kindergarten students will check out books after
Christmas: Ms. Budge’s and Ms. Flynn’s classes on Monday and Ms. Goad’s class
on Tuesday. We call the day we check out and return books “book day”. Each
student can check out one book for one week. Overdue books include books not
returned on book day by students present or absent. Overdue books should be
returned to the library between 2:00 – 2:30 and another book can then be checked
out. No overdue fines will be charged unless a book is overdue for 4 weeks. A
fine of 10 cents per school day may be charged for books overdue longer than 4
weeks. Fines will be charged for books that are damaged and any student who
loses a book must pay to replace the book. Fines can be paid in the library
between 2:00 – 2:30 daily or on book day. No student can check out a library
book if they owe a fine or have an overdue book. Students who transfer to
Westside from another school may not get a library book until all debts are paid
at the school last attended. Please send a note if you do not want to
be responsible for damages or lost library books and I will not allow your child
get a library book. When every student in the class who has a
library book checked out returns it on book day, we say the class has no overdue
books that day. When a class has had no overdue books six times, that class
will get to eat lunch with me in the library on a Friday. If students will
leave their library books at school the day before their book day, then the
books will be there on even if a student is absent. This will help the class
have no overdue books. Your child will also come to the library on Wednesday
or Thursday of each week for library skills. Skills include lessons on book
care, library organization, library references, stories, songs, films, puppets,
and other activities related to books and libraries. I look forward to helping
your child select books in the library this year. Thank you for helping us keep
our library books in good condition so we can all enjoy them longer. Remember:
reading with children is the best way to improve their reading skills. Thank you, Donna McCrory, Westside School Librarian
